Twin Falls Public Art Tour

Idaho Department Store

This painting by Leon Smith depicts one of the hubs of business in the early years of Twin Falls. Just behind you on the southwest corner of Hansen Street and Main Avenue is where this iconic building was until 2020. The Idaho Department Store was built in 1905 and quickly became the center of the city. It not only was a store that sold food, clothing, tools, and household goods but also served as the Courthouse until 1911. Often referred to as the Disneyland of the Magic Valley because of its unique money handling trollies and one of the first elevators, it served as a gathering place for families to be entertained for an afternoon. The painting of the Idaho Department Store during the holidays of 1929 brings it back to life.
