On Saturday, August 19, from 12 noon to 1 pm., Thomas Schwartz, retired cultural historian and board member of the Orton Botanical Garden in Twin Falls, will present the life and legacy of Meriwether Lewis, whose birthdate was August 18, 1774. This presentation is free of charge and will be held at the Twin Falls Public Library. Format will be a slide presentation followed by a question-and-answer period.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 – 1806 set the stage for the Western expansion of The United States. In sending the explorers on this dangerous mission into the unknown wilderness, Thomas Jefferson charged Lewis and Clark with identifying hitherto unknown plants and sending samples and descriptions back to Jefferson. Besides being president of the United States, Jefferson was a well-respected horticulturist who corresponded with and actively traded seeds and cuttings with botanists across Europe. He relished the thought of new, and exciting plants waiting to be discovered in the American interior.
Lewis, and his companion William Clark, set off from Washington D.C. in 1804 with a small team of explorers to cross the American continent from east to west. Over the next two years, they not only made major botanical discoveries, but also mapped the terrain they covered, made zoological and geological contributions, and documented life among native American tribes they visited. Primary focus will be on their contributions to our understanding of Idaho’s native plants. From ponderosa pine and Oregon grape holly to wild mock orange (our state flower), shrubby penstemon and camas lily, Lewis and Clark carefully documented the native flora of our state. Dr. Schwartz will also discuss the remarkable contributions of their Idaho-born Shoshone guide, Sacagawea, and her role in saving the entire corps as they crossed the bitterroot mountains of central Idaho.
